Der poetische Dokumentarfilm Lied der Ströme entstand unter Mitwirkung von Künstlern wie Dmitri Schostakowitsch, Bertolt Brecht, Paul Robeson, Vladimir Pozner und Pablo Picasso. Ivens besingt in einem visuellen Gedicht die Lebensumstände der an den weltgrössten Flüssen Wolga, Mississippi, Nil, Ganges, Amazonas und Yangtse lebenden Arbeiter und Bauern. Der Film stellt der Metaphorik einer in unversöhnliche Blöcke gespaltenen Welt das affektive Bild einer alle Grenzen überwindenden, zusammenfließenden Menschheit entgegen.
Die Ausgabe wird ergänzt durch den Kurzfilm Mein Kind (1955), eine Hommage an die Mütter der Welt, bei dem Ivens die künstlerische Oberleitung hatte.
