Gustavo Taretto – Argentina – 2011

CHF 14.90 / EUR 13.80

Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, with its hodgepodge of skyscrapers, colossal billboards and web of power lines, is the setting for this charming and original romance. Martin and Mariana live quite close to each other. The chances of them meeting are slim however, because Martin rarely leaves his shoe-box apartment, preferring to connect with the world by internet. He blames the city's architects for the dehumanising of his environment. Mariana's fear of lifts is a distinct handicap in this high-rise world, although she's more metropolis-friendly than her nearby neighbour. Medianeras can be translated as 'dividing walls', structures designed to keep things apart - in this case, obstacles on the path to romance. Gustavo Taretto's highly original debut feature, based on his 2005 short film, is a wistful, witty homage to Buenos Aires as twenty-first-century city.
